Why spam words matter in cold email

Spam filters score every message before it decides inbox vs. junk. Certain words — free, guarantee, act now, risk-free — are strongly associated with bulk promotional and scam mail. One or two in context are usually fine; a pile of them, especially in the subject line or paired with ALL-CAPS and exclamation marks, is a fast track to the spam folder. This checker mirrors the kind of pattern-matching filters use, so you can clean your copy before you send.

It's the same review we run on campaign copy for clients before a single email goes out. Good outbound reads like a short note from a real person — no shouting, no hype, no walls of links.

What this tool checks

It scans for four things: spam-trigger words (grouped by category — urgency, money, guarantees, hype), formatting red flags (ALL-CAPS words, repeated !!! or $$$), link and structure risks (too many URLs, raw links, image-only feel), and subject-line issues where filters weigh words most heavily. Each finding lowers the score and comes with a plain-English fix.

Spam words are only one signal

Rewording your email won't save deliverability on its own. Filters weigh your domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), your sending reputation, bounce rate and list quality far more heavily than vocabulary. Perfect copy sent from an unwarmed domain to an unverified list still lands in spam. Clean copy + verified list + proper authentication is the combination that works.

Frequently asked questions

Terms spam filters associate with junk mail — 'free', 'guarantee', 'act now', 'risk-free', 'limited time' and similar. Several of them together, especially in the subject line, raise the odds of landing in spam.

No. Copy is one factor. Domain authentication, sending reputation, list quality and bounce rate matter more. Clean copy plus a verified list plus proper SPF/DKIM/DMARC is what keeps you in the inbox.

Yes. It's completely free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser — your email copy is never sent to any server.

Aim for 80+. Above 80 your copy is clean of obvious triggers. 60–79 means minor cleanup; below 60 means several filters are likely to flag it — rewrite before sending.
